Coalhouse Pizza | Stamford, CT

I can’t believe that I grew up in Connecticut and never took the time to try Coalhouse Pizza out. No lie, I always stayed within my town and never ventured into Stamford or Norwalk to try the local restaurants there. I’ve learned that that was a big mistake.

When my Wife and I moved back to the Fairfield/Westcheter area, this is when we began to experience awesome restaurants in the area and it has been an eye-opening experience so far!

Coalhouse pizza isn’t your ordinary pizza joint. In fact, it’s probably miles, floors and heavens above your ordinary pizza joint. Their menu is jammed packed with interesting and mouth-watering combinations of toppings for pizza. On top of that, their wings are slammin’.

They’ve got character, serving their beverages in mason jars like you see below and the staff/servers was attentive and friendly.

All I can say is this: Don’t be like me. Don’t wait almost 20 years to try the awesome pizza joints in your area. Don’t wait another day to try Coalhouse Pizza.

Aren’t the Mason Jars cute?

You’ve got two kinds of pizza joints. The classic pizza spots that bring you Classic flavors, lol Di Fara Pizza. Then you’ve got Coalhouse that hits it out of the park just as hard as Di Fara Pizza… But they do it in a different way.

The Food:

MA RAINEY’S ROADHOUSE CHICKEN WINGS | Marinated in Dogfish Head’s 90 Minute IPA with Olive Oil & Garlic. Hormone-Free Chicken Wings, Coated with Japanese Panko Bread Crumbs & Lightly Fried, tumbled in the Medium House-made Sauce.

The panko bread crumbs change up and heighten the texture of these chicken wings. Something new and worth trying! The house-made sauce was tangy, sweet, a little spicy and something we couldn’t have enough of. It was so good, we were scooping up left over sauce with the greens that were beneath the wings. I mean… Look at those wings. How can you resist them?

A side of very mild blue cheese to go along with the celery and one carrot. Nicely done. I might go with a different flavor next time, to give something else a shot.

On to the pizza!

At Coalhouse Pizza, they let you split the pie with up to two of their signature topping combinations. The half with the White Sauce is the Shake Your Moneymaker topping combination and the one with the Red/Vodka Sauce is called Unforgettable.

SHAKE YOUR MONEYMAKER | Cherry Stone Clams, Pesto, Garlic, Bacon, Scallions, Mozzarella, Parmesan

UNFORGETTABLE | Vodka Sauce, Pecorino Romano, Bacon, Pepper, Basil

Both sets of toppings were so damn good. They were so good, we still can’t decide which one we liked more. The flavor combinations were so comforting and fresh. There were layers upon layers of flavor through every single bite. This pizza is, for sure, unforgettable. These were combinations on a pizza that I had never had before. I don’t even know where to start.

My wife holds off from eating crust because that’s how she maintains her incredible physique, but me? When we visited Coalhouse? Well… I went for it. All.

Let’s make it easy and start with SHAKE YOUR MONEYMAKER! This has Cherry Stone Clams, Pesto, Garlic, Bacon, Scallions, Mozzarella, and Parmesan. I was uber skeptical of this pizza because of the chance that there’ll be some grit that came along with the clams. If you’re skeptical, don’t be! It was perfect. The clams were so fresh, the pesto was a beautiful bright green and the garlic and bacon paired perfectly with the scallions and mozzarella.

Imagine it like this:

On your first bite, you get the perfect combination of pesto and mozzarella — stringy, creamy goodness with a bright and fresh garlic-y pesto. On top of that, you’ve got bacon to add a smokey layer… And then something greets you while you’re ten seconds in: the fresh clams and clam juice/flavor nicely distributed through the pizza.

Another thing I was skeptical about: clams and mozzarella? I mean, I’m all about clams casino, but I was really worried about this.

Nothing to be worried about!

You’ve got two kinds of pizza joints. The classic pizza joint that bring you Classic flavors, lol Di Fara Pizza. Then you’ve got Coalhouse that hits it out of the park just as hard as Di Fara Pizza… But they do it in a different way.

It was delicious. If I could, I would order this as often as I could. But the Unforgettable topping combo was equally as good.

Unforgettable is the alla vodka pizza you wish you knew about sooner. Vodka Sauce, Pecorino Romano, Bacon, Pepper and Basil. Yummy! We took it a step further and asked for grilled chicken on top of this too! It’s a great addition that added another layer of texture. Add the chicken!

The alla vodka sauce was so comforting and nicely made/seasoned. Not too rich and just the right amount of creamy. The bacon was a thick cut, cubed and evenly distributed along the slice. Added a nice smokey and salty touch to the slice. And of course, the pepper and basil added the perfect layer of freshness to the pizza. Every pizza should have pepper and fresh basil on top.

Alright, so the toppings were unbelievable. But how was the pizza crust?

We’ve gotta talk about the Pizza crust because that, at the end of the day, makes or breaks a pizza. You can’t just put either of these specialty combinations on top of terrible pizza crust. That’ll only get a pizza joint so far.

The pizza crust at Coalhouse was special.

Coalhouse pizza isn’t your ordinary pizza joint.

Not too thick but perfectly fluffy on the inside. It was also crispy on the outside, giving the right consistency and texture that makes it easy to hold the pizza for your first bite all the way until your last. This pizza crust won’t fall apart in your hand, without question.

You know what surprised me? The pizza crust was flavorful! It was delicious and I couldn’t stop going for more. My wife holds off from eating crust because that’s how she maintains her incredible physique, but me? When we visited Coalhouse? Well… I went for it. All of it.

Closing Thoughts

I can’t wait until we have another date night at Coalhouse Pizza. There are dozens of combinations they’ve thought up and right now, the have a perfect score in my book.
