Ishihara Market | Waimea, Kauai, HI
We went on so many adventures during our Honeymoon and honestly, it was the most amazing trip I have ever been on.
When we were on a boat off of the Na Pali Coast in Kauai, the captain of the boat, a really nice and chill guy, recommended Ishihara Market to us for lunch. He said that the spot had some of the best Poke on island. We needed to have some of that goodness!
Locals are very serious about the food on island and they won’t recommend that you try anything but the local spots.
We made sure to head straight there.
The selection that Ishikara Market had available was literally beautiful. It catered to almost every single flavor profile you could crave for in a meal. Salty, Sweet, Creamy, Spicy and a combination of all of these things. Just delicious.
You may notice that they didn’t only have Poke, but they also had other combinations of seafood that you could have over rice or with a salad.
With regards to Poke, it was intriguing because they gave you several different combinations of salty, sweet, and creamy… and I’m sure that because of this, one could live off of poke and rice for years… if not a lifetime, without getting sick of it.
Everything was colorful, vibrant, and looked yummy. Most importantly, everything we had was fresh.
We had the privilege of trying out the three options that our Captain had recommended.
Spicy Ahi Poke
If you’re looking for a spicy poke, but more of an Asian style spicy over a BBQ kind of spicy, this is the box to get. Freshly cut Ahi with a spicy mayo. Spiciness is brought to you by the one and the only Sriracha!
Fresh and perfectly flavored. This one box, rice and all, will fill you up without question.
The seaweed, masago, and chives on top are a nice touch to this dish and all other poke menu items because it added texture and nice flavors throughout each bite. I went ahead and carefully portioned the topping with each spoonful of rice and Poke… but my wife went ahead and mixed it all together! Both ways works perfectly!
I wished that we hadn’t gone for the pre-prepared lunch boxes. The rice, obviously, was cold. Still perfect in consistency, both the rice and the Ahi but I can’t help but imagine how even more perfect the meal would have been with hot piping rice.
Wasabi Ahi Poke
Also delicious, also creamy and also packed a punch. This time, instead of sriracha, Wasabi was responsible for the kick and punch with every bite. This made my eyes water… meaning it was literally perfect.
I could eat this… forever. It’s a creamy poke with a sweet soy sauce (possibly even teriyaki sauce) mixed in. The seasoning on top is perfect — seaweed, sesame, chives…
If I would do it all again, and I would without hesitation, I would only go with the Menehune Special.
If you’re looking for a good spot to eat, trust that Ishihara market will give you all you need to feel full and fulfilled.
Wonderful service, great spots to eat outside — in the shade or in the sun. It’s a great place to get snacks and groceries too, while you’re at it!
There’s a parking lot there too.
This spot is listed on The Upper Echelon for a reason. It’s just that damn good.
