Star Noodle | Lahaina, Maui, HI

We heard great things about Star Noodle in Lahaina, Maui because it was just a 10 minute drive from our hotel. This place surprised us a little bit because of its location. On your way there, it all looks like a shipping yard and then all of a sudden… BAM! There’s the restaurant! But don’t be fooled- just because the area looks industrial doesn’t mean there isn’t great food just inside the doors.

Of course, you don’t need us to tell you that, because if you go on a Friday night you can see for yourself by the crowd of people waiting just outside the door to be seated. We came first for lunch on a weekday where there was no wait and we were seated right away. We loved it so much we came back on a Friday night and the place was packed — inside and out!

We decided to get takeout (which only took 10 minutes by the way) after taking one look at the intimidating line, but we overheard a couple of guests had been waiting over an hour for a table.


If you’re in Maui you HAVE to eat here! We enjoyed everything we got, but there were a few all star standouts.

Steamed Pork Buns | Duroc Pressed Pork, Hoisin, Shiitake, Cucumber


Not the best I’ve ever had, but still well done. The bun is nice and soft and slightly sweet. The pork was tender and fatty with the right spicy bite and crunch of the scallions were refreshing. The only thing I’d wish for is for the pork to have a little more punch of flavor to it. Maybe this dish is for the pork purists out there, and there’s nothing wrong with that! But for us, I wish the pork was basted in a thick, dark, sweet/salty, stick to your ribs sauce.

Scallop Shots | Wafu Dashi, Ginger, Scallion, Lemon EVOO


A really delicate dish with subtle flavors.

It’s definitely a unique idea that I’ve never seen before and we really liked it. Even though it’s not strongly flavored it’s still scrumptious in an understated way. The scallops have a little sear but they’re still soft and almost melt in your mouth tender. The broth gives a nice boost of ocean flavor and the citrus EVOO hits you at the end. In our opinion, a little expensive but worth trying once (at least!)

Hapa Ramen | Rich Pork Broth, Roast Pork, Poached Egg, Choi Sum, Kamaboko, Bamboo Shoots, Mayu, Aka Miso


YUM YUM YUM we loved this ramen! The broth is to die for! It’s rich, creamy, and meaty. Everything else is just icing on the cake! The poached egg still has that oozy yolk when you break into it and the pork is tender enough to just eat with your spoon. The splash of soy on top with the fish cake and a sprinkle of greens take it over the top.

And did we mention the noodles? Well cooked, had a good chew, and of course, they have to have good flavor.

Awesome ramen!

Garlic Noodles — Fresh & Fried Garlic, Dashi, Green Onion


This was the BEST THING WE HAD ALL WEEK!!! I’ve never ever seen a dish like this anywhere else. The flavor was out of this world!!!!! It had a lot of garlic flavor without being overwhelming- but boy oh boy could you tell it was there. The noodles were a little fried so here and there you had a little crunch. After we mixed the fried garlic and scallions into it it just got ridiculous.

It’s salty, it’s garlic-y, it’s a little bit greasy in a great way: it was amazing!!

You have to try this dish when you’re in Maui.

If you love garlic, you need this in your life.

Malasadas | Chocolate and Butterscotch Caramel Sauces, Peanuts


The malasadas finished off our dine in meal.

They were good (almost anything sweet and deep fried is), but definitely not amazing, even with the chocolate and caramel dipping sauces. I would skip dessert here, to be honest.

In terms of malasadas, I only have eyes for Leonard’s Bakery in Oahu. They do it the best, period.

Fried Saimin | Kamaboko, Spam, Egg, Bean Sprouts, Scallions


Solid fried noodles here for take out. The noodles had a good chew with some crunch thrown in because of the stir fry. The nuggets of spam were little salty surprises and the veggies had good crunch, as well.

I would definitely order this again!

Miso Salmon | Charbroiled with Su-Miso Sauce


Really good salmon. It was cooked well and had the slightly smoky flavor like you get from a grill. Tender, flaky fish with savory asian flavors- what’s not to love? We got this for take out but I think it would probably taste even better if you dined in.

All in all an outstanding experience and when we’re in Maui, we’ll make sure to dine here again… and again!
